History

The History of Phase 10

Like many great games, Phase 10 began with a simple idea — and a lot of determination.

Phase 10 was invented in 1982 by Kenneth R. Johnson, a 22-year-old entrepreneur inspired by the many Rummy-style card games he had played throughout his life. Drawing from those classic games, Ken created a new concept built around completing ten progressive phases, blending strategy, luck, and excitement into one unforgettable experience.

What started as a creative vision soon turned into a life-changing opportunity. After being unexpectedly laid off from his job, Ken used the moment as motivation to fully develop Phase 10 and launch his own game manufacturing company. With limited resources but endless passion, the very first Phase 10 card decks were assembled in the basement of his parents’ home in Detroit, Michigan. From there, they were shipped nationwide and sold in Kmart stores across the country.

For the next five years, Ken personally managed the manufacturing and distribution of Phase 10, helping the game steadily grow in popularity. In 1987, during a memorable meeting over a Denny’s Grand Slam Breakfast and a glass of milk with ice, Fundex Games — an Indianapolis-based game company — negotiated the rights to distribute Phase 10. As they say, the rest is history.

In 2010, Mattel assumed distribution rights from Fundex and continues to bring Phase 10 to players around the world today. Ken Johnson has remained the proud owner of the Phase 10 brand and continues to receive royalties from the game he created.

By 2012, Phase 10 had sold more than 42 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the most successful card games of its kind.

As we celebrate over 40 years of Phase 10, we extend our sincere thanks to the millions of loyal players and fans who have made this game a timeless favorite across generations.
